Washington (part of the precommissioning crew - fall of 1968 - right out of boot camp) It was built in Bremerton, WA.
- Home ported in Bremerton for 4 months ( /-)
- Original Home port was Long Beach, CA
- Home port moved to San Diego, CA in 1971
I left the Navy in May of '72 (E5 - 2nd Class Petty Office). Not many ever get to spend 4 years on the same ship anymore or can make E5 in 2.5 years. Things were different then. The time between ranks was waved and we were given the opportunity to take the test for the next level.
In June of 1972 I moved to Raleigh, NC. I graduated from North Carolina State University and worked for IBM (as a software engineer) for 25 years retiring in 2002.
I then found employment with the State of North Carolina as an application developer (web application and design) and retired this year (January 1, 2017).
I love and continue to do web design and development, but now as a hobby.
My kids are grown and gone. My daughters a Marine Biologist and my son's getting his PhD in Biology.. I'm enjoying my retirement and looking forward to the next part of my life. I've been living in North Carolina for over 44 years.
